Three German Brothers Made Billions Cloning Startups

The YC of copying ideas

This might sound fake, but three German brothers cloned eBay and sold it back to them. They pocketed $43m in 100 days.

They had similar success cloning Amazon, Groupon, Zappos, Alibaba, Blue Apron. The list goes on.

They’d launch the copycats in untapped markets like Nigeria, Malaysia and Pakistan.

The brothers behind it are absolutely fascinating. Silicon Valley’s favorite beliefs were thrown out the window. Everything was contrarian. A lot was provocative.

They even created Crazy Frog.

The “Startup Incubator” (Clone Factory) is called Rocket Internet, and they didn’t exactly hide their approach. Look at how blatant the copying was:
